AUSTIN COOPER (1890-1964)

AFRICA / DYNASTIC ART OF EGYPT AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM. 1930.

Condition A-: minor creases in margins; sharp horizontal folds; minor abrasions at edges; small pin holes in top corners; unobtrusive vertical fold. Paper.

Canadian-born Austin Cooper was stylistic virtuoso and a prolific artist, whose first commercial venture was a graphic design studio in his native Canada. His highly-pictorial, Art Deco style received widespread public acclaim and he was soon working for many of Britain's most important poster-commissioning companies, such as the London Underground, the LNER and the Empire Marketing Board. He worked most extensively for the London Underground starting in 1922, designing 54 posters for them over the span of 22 years, many encouraging riders to take the Underground to get to London's museums. Depicted is a granodiorite block-statue of Sennefer, a mayor of Thebes during the reign of Amenhotep II.
