Austin served as the Commander in Chief of the Texas Volunteers for only a brief time during the Texas Revolution, making this an uncommon signature, accomplished during the Siege of Bexar and only 4 days before turning over his command to Edward Burleson to assume diplomatic duties with the U. S. The Siege of Bexar (i.e. San Antonio) was the first major campaign of the Texas Revolution, lasting from October until December 1835, and resulting in a Texas victory.<
