AVEDON, RICHARD (1923-2004)
Bob Dylan, N.Y.C. Silver contact print, 9 3/4x7 3/4 inches (24.8x19.7 cm.), with Avedon's signature, in ink, and two hand stamps on verso. 1963-1965

Additional Details

This vintage print was gifted by Avedon to Bob Cato; by descent to his son, Eric Cato. A letter describing the provenance accompanies the print.

Avedon and Bob Cato were colleagues at Harper's Bazaar beginning in the late 1940s, and were friends until Avedon's death. Avedon gifted the print to Cato during the period he was art director at Columbia Records, which was Mr. Dylan's label throughout the 1960s. During those crucial Columbia years, Bob Cato's iconic cover for Bob Dylan's "Greatest Hits" won the 1967 Grammy award for Best Album Cover, Photography, and is, to this day, Dylan's bestseller in the U.S.

The image was originally published in Harper's Bazaar (April 1965).
