AVICENNA [i. e., Abu 'Ali al-Husayn ibn 'Abdallah ibn Sina]. Vellum bifolium from a Latin manuscript of the Canon medicinae containing an excerpt on toxicology, written in Gothic script in brown ink, with headings in red and simple decorated initials alternately in blue and red. Approximately 330x440 mm, irregularly cropped at top with some text loss; apparently used as early binder's waste, with adhesive discoloration on recto of first leaf and verso of second leaf obliterating some text, center crease crudely reinforced on recto and verso. The Canon of the Persian physician Avicenna (980-1037) was an encyclopedic compilation of Greco-Muslim medical knowledge that in various Latin versions remained authoritative in Europe into the 17th century. The excerpt here, concerning poisonous plants and animals, comprises the text of book 4, fen 6, treatise 1, summa 3, chapters 5-11, through the beginning of treatise 3, chapter 1.
