Irish-born Adair lived for more than forty years in North America, chiefly trading with the Chickasaw people in South Carolina. He was also involved in political upheaval during King George's War on a trade mission to the Eastern Choctaw. His work in such areas did not always end well. Adair's close association with Chief Red Shoes, who sided with the British, led to a rift among the Choctaw resulting in Red Shoes's assassination.
