Anni Albers was one of the most influential textile designers and printmakers of the 20th century. She is considered to be the first artist to combine geometric abstraction with weaving and textiles. She was born in Berlin and studied weaving at the Bauhaus in 1922, eventually becoming an instructor there in 1929. In 1933 Albers and her husband, artist Josef Albers, emigrated to the United States and founded the Black Mountain College in Asheville, North Carolina. Anni Albers continued to teach and exhibit her work. Her 1949 solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York was the first of its kind to feature a designer. Shortly thereafter the Albers moved to New Haven, Connecticut, and Anni pounced with renewed focus on commercial fabric design. She began printmaking in 1963. The composition of the present piece makes obvious use of her weaving practice, interest in geometric abstraction and elements of Pre-Columbian art.
