VARIANT ISSUE WITH A PRINTING OF THE JOHN BROWN SONG All Slaves Were Made Free by Abraham Lincoln [caption title]. Color lithographed broadsheet showing a Union soldier surrounded by ex-slaves, with text and the "Original Version of the John Brown Song" on the verso, 11x81/2 inches; 3-inch diagonal piece of right blank corner archivally repaired. Np (but probably Boston or Philadelphia), circa 1863

Additional Details

A remarkable piece of ephemera, probably used to recruit soldiers in either the Boston or Philadelphia area, as both raised colored regiments almost immediately after Emancipation. We could locate only a few copies of this piece, and fewer yet of this variant with the John Brown Song. No precedent in terms of issues has been established.
