Anderson, George (fl. 1784) James Cook (1728-1779) et alia.
A New, Authentic and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World, Undertaken and performed by Royal Authority.

London: Alex Hogg, [1784-1786].

Folio, engraved portrait of Cook bound opposite title; illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of Cook, one large folding map, and 155 full-page engravings; bound in contemporary reversed sheep, rebacked; ex libris Solomon R. Guggenheim, with his bookplate inside the front board; 15 x 9 1/2 in.

This important collection of English voyages contains the circumnavigations of Cook, Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson, and Drake. "Anderson sometimes gives the original accounts, others are edited or abridged versions, and frequently additional materials from other sources are added to give scope and depth to the narratives" (Hill). The book was originally published in 80 parts and appeared with minor variations. In this copy the title conforms to Forbes's second state; the frontispiece portrait, "engraved by Mr. Thornton," is undated; the caption title on page 5 reads A New, Genuine, and Complete History of the Whole of Capt. Cook's Voyages; and the death of Cook plate is dated 12 March 1785.

Hill 18; Beddie 17-19; Forbes 61.

From the Library of the late Stanley DeForest Scott, sold to benefit the Library of the Grolier Club.
