Fantasies Amoureuses. Où son descrites les Amours d'Alerio & Mariane.

Rouen: Romain de Beauvais, 1601.

First edition, 12mo, woodcut printer's device to title page, license leaf on verso of title dated 14 July 1601; lacking two text leaves in signature S (pages 419-422), bound in full contemporary calf, gilt-tooled spine, marbled edges, worn, front joint cracked; ex libris Maurice Desgeorge of Lyon, with his bookplate; two leaves with a large dark stain that does not impede legibility; 5 1/2 x 3 in.

This unusual work has escaped the notice of critics because of its rarity. René Demoris describes it as the only first-person novel written in the 17th century not in a picaresque, imaginary journey, or utopian genre. For more see: Françoise Lavocat's Les Confessions d'un Promeneur Solitaire Anonyme au début du XVIIe Siècle: Les Fantasies Amoureuses (1601).

Rare, Worldcat locates three copies in libraries worldwide, two at the British Library, the third in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale; rare to nonexistent at auction.
