Cooper received the patch from Apollo 1 mission commander Grissom in late 1966. Cooper describes how the tragic Apollo 1 fire and the deaths of the crew came as a shock to himself, the Astronaut Office, and indeed the entire nation. The letter reads in part: "Gus was a very close friend. We were both selected as Mercury Astronauts in 1959 and later worked together on the Gemini Program."
