Apollo 1 Service Module Thruster Cover. A plastic Marquardt Corporation protective cover removed from the 012 Service Module after the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire of 27 January 1967. The Service Module had four sets of four 100 pound thrusters located every 90 degrees along its circumference. They were part of the Reaction Control System used for spacecraft maneuvers. The two piece cover protected the engine nozzle from damage and was removed prior to launch. Each half has the yellow and black Marquardt logo and a black ID label which reads in part: "Cover Half Assy, Part No. FS4946, Contract NAS9-150, Order No. M6J7XAA-400012A." With 4 inspection stamps. A certification letter reads in part: "These two Reaction Control System motor covers were removed from the Apollo I Service Module after the disaster which resulted in the deaths of astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee." Signed "J. Gleaves." An additional letter, with a notarized signature of Ricky Lanclos reads in part: "James Gleaves was in the Clean Room on Friday, January 27, 1967 and was the first employee to reach the Apollo 1 CM after the fatal fire started. He was hospitalized with burns to his hands and smoke inhalation and after his recovery was presented with these two RCS covers for his heroic efforts." Mr. Gleaves was a mechanical technician for North American.
