Autograph Letter Signed with a charming self portrait, smoking, to his friends in California ("Dear Youse")
One large sheet, 17x14 inches, tightly written all in capitals. No date, but 1942 from content.
An amusing letter, talking about a Saroyan play going into rehearsal, their friends, and his love life.
"The Saroyan mishagos is getting under way. The inane goings on are mythological. He has hired and fired in the first two days of rehearsal the head waiter from 21, the taxi driver stationed in front of the Pierre, the bartender from the 13 club and two hat check girls from the Stork. So far the only ones set are Canada Lee, a hat check girl from the stork and ...Carol Marcus....Saroyan phoned me and we made a date to meet at Cafe Society about midnight. I was esconced in said fleabag at the appointed hour and in walks Bill with Carol...her low cut dress, exposing a couple of inviting sex lures, has the wolves in town foaming at the mouth. Nothing like it has been seeni this side of the Kentucky Hills. I'm just a simple Jewish boy who spends all of his time being plastered at the 21.... Brooks Atkinson is back in town and will take up the cudgels for the theater in a couple of weeks."
Goes on to mention Wendy Barrie, Shep Traube, Gilbert Miller ("threatens to come into town with a little number titled The Rich get Richer"), Ethel Merman, and Pegler.
