SON SIGNS NAME OF THE DYING J.S. BACH BACH, JOHANN CHRISTIAN. One line autograph inscription Signed, "Johann Seb: Bach," acknowledging receipt of payment on behalf of his father, Johann Sebastian Bach, on a fragment of a receipt book with two other similar inscriptions by others. The complete inscription, "C[antor] Johann Seb[astian] Bach acc[epi] 2 fl[orin]." 2 3/4x4 inches; moderate toning overall, folds, minor bleedthrough from two similar inscriptions at upper edge verso. [Leipzig, circa 2 July 1750]

Additional Details

The present fragment records three disbursements from the Lobwasser Bequest of 1750 (see Bach-Dokumente, ed. Neumann and Schulze, 1963, vol. I, No. 145). Some choir performances at St. Thomas or St. Nikolai in Leipzig were held in honor of church benefactors who had arranged bequests to be paid to the cantor as honoraria. While Bach had signed the receipt book many times beginning in 1723 when he assumed the post of Thomas Cantor, illness (followed by death less than one month later on 28 July) necessitated that his son sign the receipt book for him.
Provenance: From the collection of Wanda Landowska and bequeathed to the present owner.
