first octavo edition. Back's overland expedition of 1833-35 to the Great Fish River, the first expedition under his own command, was undertaken to search for Ross who had been presumed missing. By the time Back reached Great Slave Lake, news came of Ross's safe return to England. Back continued the expedition and descended the river, now called Back River in his honor, and explored Chantrey Inlet. His description and chart of the river remained the authoritative source into the 20th century. The large-paper, quarto first edition, published by Murray the same year as the octavo edition, was issued in few copies and is quite scarce. "One of the fundamental books on Arctic exploration"--Hill 42; Arctic Bibliography 851; Sabin 2613.

From the library of Dr. John M. Levinson, with his bookplate.
