BADIA VILATO (1914-2012) VARIG / DE NORTE A SUL / BRAZILIAN AIRLINES. Circa 1950s.
29 3/4x21 1/4 inches, 75 1/2x54 cm.
Condition A.
Spanish poster designer Vilato left Spain for France during the Civil War, to continue his career as a commercial artist. His most recognizable work is for Air France, depicting its iconic seahorse logo as a celestial Pegasus with a star for an eye, encompassing an Air France plane and the earth. For this rare design for Brazil's earliest airline, Vilato presents a pointed geometric play on the Mobius strip to illustrate the airline's "North to South" capabilities. This poster, one of at least two he designed for the company, is similar to surrealist-inspired images for BOAC coming out of the United Kingdom during the same period.
