BAINBRIDGE, WILLIAM. Two Letters Signed, "WmBainbridge," to Lieutenant George W. Storer, appointing him commander of the U.S. Schooner Lynx or ordering him to outfit the Lynx for service in the Gulf of Mexico. Each 1 page, 4to, with integral address leaf, first letter on pale blue paper; faint scattered dampstaining and soiling, folds. Boston, 21 June 1815; 15 October 1817
21 June 1815: "You are hereby appointed to the command of the U.S. Sch'r Lynx. . . . The test of the complement of the crew allowed here is annexed [listed at bottom of page]. The armament is to consist of one long 12 pounder and four 12 pound carronades." 18 October 1817: ". . . [T]he U.S. Schooner Lynx . . . [is] to be immediately fitted out for a Cruize in the Bay of Mexico. I have to direct that you prepare for said Service with all possible despatch; Her Armament you will receive from the Navy Yard at Charlestown, it has already been designated to Captain Hull [Isaac Hull, commandant of Charlestown Navy Yard]. . . ." On July 3, 1815, Bainbridge helped bring about the conclusion of the Second Barbary War by leading a squadron to the North African coast aboard the USS Independence in order to apply pressure to Algerian pirates who continued to prey upon American commercial vessels despite the peace treaty signed by the Dey of Algiers. Bainbridge's squadron included the U.S. Schooner Lynx, commanded by George Washington Storer. In 1817, Storer patrolled the Gulf of Mexico for pirates while commanding the same schooner.
