On July 3, 1815, Bainbridge helped bring about the conclusion of the Second Barbary War by leading a squadron to the North African coast aboard the USS Independence in order to apply pressure to Algerian pirates who continued to prey upon American commercial vessels despite the peace treaty signed by the Dey of Algiers. Bainbridge's squadron included the U.S. Schooner Lynx, commanded by George Washington Storer. In 1817, Storer patrolled the Gulf of Mexico for pirates while commanding the same schooner.
