In 1535, Peruzzi undertook the rebuilding of the derelict Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne in Rome. This was his last architecural project and was completed posthumously in 1538. The palazzo belonged to the brothers Angelo and Pietro Massimo, distant ancestors of the Roman general Fabius Maximus Cunctator who had saved Rome from Hannibal
