The drawing, with holograph notes and caption, "Service under difficulties," in pencil [published as an engraving with a different caption, "The captain searching for his sister," facing page 335]. A line drawn meandering through the image demonstrates to engraver the line of highlights, in pencil. The manuscript, 27 lines describing the scene in the image and some desired technical effects. 7 1/2x5 inches; horizontal fold with minor loss to image, remnants of hinging at upper corners recto, short closed tear at lower edge, faint scattered soiling.
