BALLANTYNE, ROBERT M. Ink and wash drawing, study for an illustration in his book The Young Trawler (1884), with an Autograph Manuscript Signed, "RMB," on verso. The drawing, with holograph notes and caption, "Service under difficulties," in pencil [published as an engraving with a different caption, "The captain searching for his sister," facing page 335]. A line drawn meandering through the image demonstrates to engraver the line of highlights, in pencil. The manuscript, 27 lines describing the scene in the image and some desired technical effects. 7 1/2x5 inches; horizontal fold with minor loss to image, remnants of hinging at upper corners recto, short closed tear at lower edge, faint scattered soiling.
