Barkley Hendricks, born in Philadelphia, studied painting at both the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Yale University. He has taught painting at Connecticut College in New London, CT since 1972. Hendricks's realist life-size portraits against monochromatic backgrounds were very influential in redefining figurative painting in the 1960s and 70s. His impressive classical painting skills infused portaits of urban street life with Renaissance-inspired precision. His first major paintings retrospective, Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool, was exhibited at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2008, and travels to the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in 2009.
