This beautiful study of a magnolia blossom is a scarce, early example of Barkley Hendrick's work in watercolor. Hendricks exhibited several small series of watercolor works in the late 1970s, beginning in 1975 with this series on magnolias. According to the Nasher Museum's Wendy Hower, in Art Journey: Take all the Time You Need (Adrienne Hawkins), Hendricks painted a series of magnolia watercolors while staying in Durham, NC for the summer of 1975 with his girlfriend Adrienne Hawkins. Hawkins was there as a dancer in the American Dance Festival, and based on her modelling and his photographs that summer Hendricks created the painting,Take All the Time You Need (Adrienne Hawkins), 1975.
