Additional Details

". . . I can no longer regard you as I did before . . . . I could have overlooked much in these times of sectional variance. I could have overlooked . . . your resignation. But, with that of your State, your allegiance to the glorious flag of these United States were hence dissolved. . . .
"But I cannot overlook that you are now in arms against my country (might I not with propriety say, too, your country). But in the midst of the waters whose shores are now bristling with armed men--waves a flag . . . . It is the flag which waved over your head when at Vera Cruz, at Contreras, at Mexico, you conferred lustre upon it & gained glory for yourself. . . .
"If therefore I still entertain kind regards for yourself . . . it must be with a full understanding of how I regard your position.
"I cannot congratulate you in your new title, nor can I use it. I prefer to use that one which you once felt to be an honor, and which you honored. Maj. G.T. Beauregard."
