Warren P. Barnes was born (apparently free) in Orange, MA in 1832. He enlisted in the army as a musician on 23 November 1863, entering the 2nd Brigade of the 81st Regiment of Colored Infantry. He served for three years and was discharged in New Orleans in August 1865. He had become ill during his service, suffering from "disease of the hands and lungs." The documents include his discharge, various applications for a military pension, a mourning letter from his veterans group (1887), and a certificate of marriage.<
