Weiss held the position of a miniature painter at the court in Munich. He was a prolific draftsman and printmaker, with a remarkable ability for adopting different styles: a talent which led him to create a number of etched "impostures" to deceive the connoisseurs of his time (see Print Quarterly XIX, 2, June 2002, pp. 136-147).
