Additional Details

A fun sports-related Gorey spot that appeared as the lead image in this article, published in Sports Illustrated's 1983 "Special Classic Edition." It illustrates a rather obscure baseball fact from October 14, 1893, when, in an attempt to increase offense, former player and manager Harry Wright suggested that umpires keep the ball-strike count secret until the at bat is concluded. Wright, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953, was manager of the undefeated 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings and is credited with introducing the practice of one fielder's backing up another.
