Bates (1859-1929) Professor of English at Wellesley, wrote the poem America the Beautiful in 1893 while on a trip to Colorado. It was first published in The Congregationalist in 1895, and subesequently underwent several changes. The version as we know it, and the one printed here, was written by Bates in 1913.
