BATES, KATHARINE LEE. Two items: Signature, on the cover of a pamphlet below a printed copy of her "America the Beautiful" * Autograph Letter Signed. The pamphlet, including the complete poem followed by her essay about the poem. 4 pages, 12mo, unbound as issued; faint uneven toning touching signature, two holes punched in left margin, horizontal fold. The letter, to "My dear Mr. Winslow," informing him that she has asked her publishers to send a copy of her book, The Retinue, and sending "an autographed copy of the hymn you are so good as to like." 1 page, 8vo, "Wellesley College" stationery; horizontal folds. Additional Details

Bates (1859-1929), a Professor of English at Wellesley, wrote the poem "America the Beautiful" in 1893 while on a trip to Colorado. The version as we know it, which is printed here, was written by Bates in 1913.
