Beals lived and worked in Greenwich Village at the height of turn-of-the-century bohemian life. Although she photographed throughout the country, New York and Greenwich Village are the locales with which she is most strongly associated. A 1918 guidebook, The Little Book of Greenwich Village, described Beals as "The official photographer for Greenwich Village."
