Additional Details

A pioneer with an entrepreneurial spirit, Jessie Tarbox Beals is best known for her photographs of New York City''s Greenwich Village, where she lived and worked for many years. The first documented female photojournalist (she worked to great acclaim in St. Louis and Buffalo, NY), Beals made portraits of celebrities and scenic postcards to earn her living while experimenting with technical processes (including the flash and paper negative), photographing the neighborhood and its bohemian inhabitants. Although she paved the way for female photographers to follow, and produced a remarkable body of work, Beals ended her career in relative obscurity. Today, her photographs are both a nostalgic glimpse into New York City''s past and the result of an enthusiastic photographer who loved nothing more than, in her words, to "hustle" for a good picture.
