Among Beard's friends and famous people are: Andy Warhol, Tennessee Williams, Henry Geldzahler, Robin Byrd, Pat Loud, Quentin Crisp, John Corigliano, Michael Feingold, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Virgil Thomson. General photographs include subjects entitled New York Celebrities, Three Gentlemen, Three Serious Ladies, A Playwright and Poet, are interleaved between the portraits. Beard's warm recollections and comments about each subject are type-set by Jim Fredrikson and Ted Danforth after Beard's own handwriting. It is the first book both created and published by Beard.
