Painters Larry Calcagno and Beauford Delaney met in 1953 in Paris, and they quickly became close friends. They kept a correspondence after Calcagno returned to the U.S. in early 1954. Calcagno returned to Europe in 1955, and invited Delaney to accompany him on the first of several trips to Spain and Italy. Leeming pp. 116-17; 167-68.
