BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979)
Untitled (Abstraction in Green).

Oil on linen canvas, 1961. 410x275 mm; 16x10 7/8 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Dated in oil, lower left recto. Signed, dated and inscribed "Clamart, Seine" in oil, verso.

Provenance: gift from from the artist; Don Fink, Paris, thence by descent to his estate; private collection, Paris.

Don Fink was also an expatriate artist living in Paris who became part of Beauford Delaney's circle of friends soon after his arrival in Paris in 1953. They showed together in 1956 at Galerie Arnaud in a group exhibtion of abstract American painters.

This small canvas is a radiant example of Delaney's mid-career abstraction in a warm, yellowish green. A year after his successful solo exhibiton at Galerie Paul Facchetti, 1961 was a tumulutous year for Delaney. He exhibited widely in Paris, but then suffered a mental collapse in July, after which he did not return to oil painting unitl the next year. Leeming p. 115; Canterbury p. 60.
