Oil monotype on thick cream wove paper, 1966. 572x762 mm; 22 1/2x30 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Istanbul, Turkey" in felt tip pen and red ink, lower right, and again in ballpoint pen and black ink, lower left.

Provenance: the artist; gift to Mary Painter Garin (with her Paris address inscribed in pencil on the verso); thence by descent to the current owner.

Illustrated: Joann Moser, Singular Impressions: The Monotype in America, National Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 1997, p. 149. Though not included in the museum exhibition, this monotype was illustrated in the catalogue.

This striking and large montoype dates from the summer of 1966 when Beauford Delaney traveled to Istanbul to visit James Baldwin after attending the Venice Biennale.
