Color pastels on tan wove paper, 1933-34. 560x483 mm; 22x19 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Signed, dated "1934" and inscibed "NYC" in ballpoint pen and ink, lower left.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist's brother, Joseph Delaney; private collection.

This portrait is one of the earliest works by Beauford Delaney to come to auction. In 1930, at the age of 26, Delaney moved from his native Tennessee to New York. His first solo exhibition, Exhibit of Portrait Sketches by Beauford Delaney, also in 1930 at the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library, included five pastel and 10 charcoal portraits.
