Provenance: acquired directly from the artist's brother Joseph Delaney; private collection.

This sensitive portrait is an early work by Beauford Delaney likely made soon after he moved from his native Tennessee to New York in 1930. His first solo exhibition was Exhibit of Portrait Sketches by Beauford Delaney that year was at the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library, and included five pastel and 10 charcoal portraits.
