BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979)
Untitled.

Gouache on illustration board, 1956. 724x540 mm; 28 1/2x21 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right.

Provenance: private collection, Florida; thence by descent, private collection.

Beauford Delaney made this beautiful gouache in his first Paris period of abstraction. When Delaney immigrated from New York to Paris in 1953, Delaney's painting shifted towards pure abstraction with his interest in color and light. In January of 1956, he also moved to 28 rue Paul Valliant in the Parisian suburb of Clamart where lived until the fall of 1960. Delaney worked on board in the mid-1950s for only a short time - his later gouache works are typically on paper. His masterful intertwining of layers of gouache reflects his growing freedom with vivid colors. He also began exhibiting with Galerie Paul Facchetti by the late 1950s.
