BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979)
Untitled (Portrait of a Young Man).

Color pastels and charcoal on gray, textured wove paper, circa 1930-35. 597x445 mm; 23x17 1/2 inches. Signed in charcoal, lower left.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist's brother Joseph Delaney; private collection.

This sensitive portrait is an early work by Beauford Delaney likely made soon after he moved from his native Tennessee to New York in 1930. That same year, his first solo exhibition was Exhibit of Portrait Sketches by Beauford Delaney at the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library, and included five pastels and 10 charcoal portraits. Canterbury p. 125.
