Bernd and Hilla Becher have been working together for almost fifty years. After decades of production their photographic output has stretched geographically across North America and Western Europe, focusing on a variety of structures--mine shafts, silos, furnaces, cooling towers and factories--which all have a strong and definite form and design quality. Their photographs are always minimalist; stark backgrounds with nominal light and even shadows, concentrating on the massive presence of their subject's monumentale beauty. Their multi-faceted studies of the industrial landscape often serve to document an entity fading into extinction, and are represented in numerous museum collections.
