Additional Details

In 1898, at the invitation of the Emperor, Bell traveled with his family to Japan, arriving at Yokohama on October 5. During their three-month stay, Bell and family visited the Emperor and various destinations in Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nagasaki and Tokyo.
Eliza Catherine Scidmore was the mother of Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore (1856-1928), who was the first female board member of the National Geographic Society. Bell was the Society's second president.
