Additional Details

first edition in english. The most significant discovery of Bellinghausen's Russian expedition to circumnavigate the globe aboard the Vostok and the Mirny was what is believed to have been the first sighting of the Antarctic continent in January 1820. What is known for sure, however, is that the expedition was only the second after Cook to circumnavigate the Antarctic Circle. The First Edition of his narrative published in Russia in 1831 is quite rare. This Halkluyt Society edition, the first English translation, is one of approximately 1200 sets printed. Rosove 33.A1; Spence 117; Taurus 3.

From the library of Dr. John M. Levinson, with his bookplate.
