"Many of your memorable father's pupils have told you, surely, how important he was to them. He liberated and civilized many of us. As an undergraduate, I must have taken every course he gave. He was, moreover, a singularly charming man. I can remember, when I read of his death, how it grieved me and how sorry I was for you--though I knew you only by name.
"I felt that he was fond of me. . . . He kidded me in Evanston, accusing me of disrespect for his field. I made fun of it, he said, in Henderson the Rain King. Not at all. I'd never have written it if I hadn't studied with him. I'm glad to remember that I gave him some amusement. . . ."
