BEN BENN
Untitled.

Oil on canvas, 1964. 712x986 mm; 28x38 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto.

Born in what is now the southwest Ukraine, Benn (1884-1983) left Russia with his family in the mid 1890s to escape Czar Alexander III's pogroms against the Jews. In New York, he studied at the National Academy of Design. By the 1920, he was a fixture at J.B. Newmann's New Art Circle gallery (and had his first solo exhibition there in 1925). While Benn flirted with Abstract Expressionism and Cubism, he is predominantly a representational painter.
