BEN SHAHN
Food Endless Trees, People Few<>.

Pen and ink on wove paper, 1956.127x165 mm; 4 3/4x6 1/4 inches. Signed in ink, upper right. Ex-collection the artist and Kennedy Galleries, New York, with the ink stamp, verso, and the labels on the frame back.

An illustration design for Homage to Mistress Bradstreet<>. Shahn created ink drawings to accompany this breakthrough collection of poems for John Berryman. Edmund Wilson called it "the most distinguished long poem by an American since "The Waste Land," a judgement borne out by Berryman's later winning the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the Bollingen Prize. With a pen and ink drawing of a figure on the verso.
