BEN SHAHN
Harlem<>.

Brush and ink, 1931-32. 191x260 mm; 7½x10¼ inches. Signed in ink, lower right. Ex-collection the artist and Kennedy Galleries, New York, with the label on the frame back.

During the early 1930s, Shahn witnessed his career as an artist beginning to strengthen and take hold. He had his first one-man exhibition, at the Downtown Gallery, New York, in 1930, and was included in group exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1931-32. Finally, in 1932, Shahn assisted Diego Rivera on his mural project at Rockefeller Center (these were later removed due to their controversial content).
