BEN SHAHN
Levana (I Knew Her by Her Roman Symbols).

Brush and ink on cream wove paper, 1931. 360x280 mm; 141/4x11 inches. Signed and inscribed "I knew her by her Roman symbols" in ink, lower margin.

The cover design for Shahn's Levana Portfolio, 1931 (see Prescott 87-96 and pp. 86-91). The same figure was also used in a later lithograph of the same title, published by Gemini, G.E.L., Los Angeles, in 1966 (Prescott 71).

Levana, the Roman goddess, held Shahn's interest during most of his career. She was the goddess of infants and also watched over human education.
