Born in Kovno, Lithuania, in 1898, Shahn immigrated with his family to Brooklyn in 1906. In his teens, he apprenticed at Hessenberg's Lithography Shop on Beekman Street and later attended New York University and the City University of New York. In 1922, he left the latter school to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League.

Early works such as the current one from Shahn's student years in New York are extremely scarce.
