UNPUBLISHED BOOK COVER DESIGNS BEN SHAHN
Two gouache and ink drawings.

The Shape of Content (Bird)<> * The Shape of Content (Hands)<>. Both circa 1956-57. Both 222x157 mm; 8 3/4x6 inches. Both ex-collection the artist, with the ink stamp verso, and label on the frame back.

Both drawings were studies for the book jacket of Shahn's best known and most influential writings. The Shape of Content<> was based on a series of six lectures given by Shahn at Harvard University in 1956-57 on such topics as the education of artists, the creative process, the nonconformity of artists and various modern art movements and artists. Shahn was an artist-in-residence at Harvard University that year, with a studio on the upper floor of the Fogg Museum.
