BENJAMIN CHAMPNEY
View of Mt. Washington, from North Conway.

Oil on canvas. 508x610 mm; 20x24 inches. Signed and inscribed "N. Conway" in oil on the frame back. Ex-collection private collection, New York.

Champney (1817-1907) is considered by many art historians to be the founder of the "North Conway Colony" of painters who came to North Conway, New Hampshire, during the latter half of the 19th century. He purchased a home there in 1853, and his enthusiasm for the area drew many Boston and New York artists. During the summers North Conway was filled with artists painting en plein air, and Champney's studio became a social center for these artists and tourists alike.
