BENNY ANDREWS (1930 - 2006)
Mother Earth.

Oil, canvas and extensive painted fabric collage, including a zipper, two snaps and biege courduroy, on linen canvas, 1970. 762x508 mm; 30x20 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. Signed, titled and dated in oil, verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, private collection, Connecticut (early 1970s); thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New York (2015).

Mother Earth is an outstanding example of Benny Andrew's mid-career expressive work in painted collage. While not on the same scale, this expressive figure is similar in intensity and construction to others found in large-scale works from the period, including No More Games, 1970, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Down the Road, 1971. Each figure has a three dimensional nose constructed of canvas, and incorporates objects including fragments of found clothing.
