Additional Details

15 March 1965: ". . . I am returning to the midwest for an expedition up the headwaters of the Missouri River. With a companion interested in our western history I am going to follow up the trail of Lewis and Clark . . ."
6 April 1966: ". . . I have been through a rough winter. On Jan. 30th I had a stroke and 2 weeks later a major heart attack . . ."
14 November 1967: ". . . [Cotton Weighing] did come up for auction at Parke-Bernet early last Spring if I remember correctly. Billy [Rose] as you know paid $3000 for it in 1939 or 1940. At the auction it was bid in for $17,000 and shortly thereafter re-sold for $35,000. So I should have encouraged you to buy some Bentons at 1930 prices . . . Maybe this is happening because people think I'm near to turning up my toes. But I'll fool 'em . . ."
