Bern Hill was a graphic designer and a painter. He is best known for a series of paintings which were turned into posters for the General Motors Electro-Motive Division, all of which depicted trains coursing their way through the American countryside. In this separate series he depicts landmarks and well turned-out tourists up and down the Chesapeake & Ohio Line. The Cape Henry lighthouse was built in 1792, commissioned by the government to aid in the safe navigation of the Chesapeake Bay. It was designed and built by John McComb, Jr. and is the third oldest lighthouse in the United States.
